Though children’s primary teeth will eventually make way for permanent adult teeth, addressing existing decay is still an essential part of the care process. Baby teeth can remain a part of your child’s smile for several years, and their presence helps guide adult teeth into proper positioning.
Because of these important aspects, our team at Dr. Robert Testen, DDS provide quality cavity treatment for children in Germantown and surrounding communities. Call our office today to set up an appointment for your little ones.
Preparing Your Child for Cavity Treatment
While a strong oral hygiene routine is great for a child to establish, not all cavities can be prevented. At our practice, we emphasize to parents the importance of keeping regular appointments for cleanings and exams so we can treat any signs of decay before becoming more significant.
Our goal is to make your child as comfortable as possible during their visits. Dr. Bob loves to make kids laugh, so before any treatment begins, your child can relax. We utilize the “tell, show, and do” philosophy, where we first explain the procedure, show them what we will do, then perform the procedure. This method of explaining things often reduces any fear or anxiety your loved one might experience.
First, Dr. Bob addresses any questions or concerns prior to rendering treatment. He then shows you the areas of concern on the radiographs as well as the actual areas in your child’s smile. The treatment plan we craft will indicate the number of appointments necessary and whether nitrous oxide (laughing gas) can help make their child more comfortable during the restorative appointment. Parents are welcome to come back into the operatory during treatment or wait in our reception room if they prefer.
Gentle, Non-invasive Decay Removal
At your child’s restorative appointment, Dr. Bob talks with your child throughout the procedure to comfort them and complete treatment quickly. We use composite (white) resin for our filling material, which requires less tooth structure to be removed. A composite filling also looks more natural, as it blends seamlessly with neighboring teeth.
We continually check the filling at each future appointment and provide tips on proper at-home care to ensure longevity and prevent recurrent decay. If Dr. Bob feels nitrous oxide alone will not be sufficient to complete the restorative treatment in-office, proper referrals to trusted specialists will be provided to the parent.
Dental sealants are recommended when permanent molars have especially deep grooves that can trap food and debris. Sealants are a non-invasive procedure designed to prevent tooth decay and can be applied by Dr. Bob or any of our dental hygienists.
